Recha & Hannacha Cohn
Hannacha (Hannah) Cohn was the youngest of the Jews of Halle/Saale to perish in the Shoah. Hannah, her mother, Recha, and her grandmother Thekla Cohn were deported from Halle/Saale to Sobibor on June 1, 1942. Thekla’s husband was Feodor Cohn. Although I cannot say for certain how he died, (probably suicide) he is listed as a Shoah victim who died on May 14, 1941.
Also, on the same transport to Sobibor were Oma Julchen’s first cousin Pauline (geb Guttmann) and her husband, who was Opa Karl’s first cousin, Alfred Katzenstein. It was Pauline & Alfred who introduced Oma & Opa to each other.
A total of 61 people were on the same transport from Halle/Saale to Sobibor, 6/1/1942, and all were murdered on the same day, 6/3/1942.
From my mother’s story:
The Cohn’s had a baby girl Hannah and I took care of her. I knew this family for many years. They had a variety wholesale business next to where we lived on Franke Strasse. Mr. Cohn left for England in June of 1939. His wife and little Hannah were to follow but it was too late and they perished like so many other people.
