Since receiving the Gutmann  & Katzenstein family trees, I have learned that my Oma Julchen Pfifferling had a first cousin, Pauline Katzenstein (geb. Gutmann), and that my Opa Karl Pfifferling had a first cousin, Alfred Katzenstein and that they were married to each other. In my mother’s story, she mentions that her parents were introduced through mutual cousins. Pauline and Alfred were the cousins who introduced my grandparents to each other. Pauline and Alfred Katzenstein, who were residents of Eisleben, were deported from Halle/Saale to Sobibor on 6/1/1942. (Just like so many other things I never knew this.)

This, of course, is sad enough but then I realized something else. The little 3-year-old girl, Hannacha Cohn, that my mother babysat for, and her mother, and her grandmother were also on the same transport from Halle/Saale to Sobibor. All 5 of them perished three days later. In all, there were 59 persons on the 6/3/1942 transport to Sobibor and all were murdered on 6/3/1942.

On the page titled,”Die Toten Der Stadt Halle”, you will find Hannacha Cohn. She was the little girl that my mother took care of, and was the youngest of the Jews of Halle to perish in the Nazi concentration camps.

From my mother’s story: I worked in a Jewish household. The Cohn’s had a baby girl Hannah and I took care of her. I knew this family for many years. They had a variety wholesale business next to where we lived on Franke Strasse. Mr. Cohn left for England in June of 1939. His wife and little Hannah were to follow but it was too late and they perished like so many other people.

Where today is the rise to No.12 a GDR prefabricated building, was formerly a house with the census No.17. It was home and headquarters of the “cattle-action S. Chanterelle”. After the death of transmitter Chanterelle his four sons continued the business. One of seven siblings was born in Wanfried / Hessen on June 21, 1883 Julius (“Jule”) Chanterelle, German soldier in World War 1. His niece Hildegard seed field (1922-2004, USA) describes him as a friendly, gentle man who likes met in a nearby pub to play cards with some friends. 1933, the cattle business was excluded from the “Central German Association of horse trading” and after the prohibition in 1937, the brothers had to stop the cattle trade chanterelle. On April 25, 1938 Julius belonged Chanterelle to 13 Halle Jews who were arrested in connection with the “ASR-action” and taken to the Buchenwald concentration camp. The Jews were supposed to “work scrubbing” the departure from Germany are moved by arbitrary arrests. Julius Chanterelle received in Buchenwald prisoner number 2870 and had in the quarry work. Three weeks after delivery of the 54-year-old was on May 16, 1938 “shot on the run”. His widow Dorothea In 1939 he immigrated to Shanghai and later to England.

The transport of 1 June 1942 From Kassel-Halle to Sobibor, which included Alfred & Pauline Katzenstein, Tekla, Recha, & Hannacha Cohn and Selma Appel:

In 155 Halle, 155 Jews were joined, as is evident from the correspondence of the Gestapo Hall with the Chief Financial Officer in Magdeburg [LHASA Magdeburg, MD G1 / 390]. The Halle transport was also planned very early. The people who were destined for the deportation were informed about their imminent “emigration” in Halle on April 11, in the municipal office to receive further instructions and to complete the declarations of assets. Several suicides from this period are documented, such as for the married couple Gertrud and Siegfried Reyersbach from Weißenfels, the 16.4. voluntarily separated from life [300 years of Jews in Halle, Halle, 1992, p. 255, 259].

(In the seven weeks between April 11, 1942 when the people were informed of the deportation, and transport of June 3, 1942, 59 people in Halle an der Saale committed suicide.)

Hi. I am looking for information on the Simon family from Halle. The two younger children, Walter and Werner got to the UK on kindertransports. Ruth also came to the UK and Leo was in Shanghai with Suzi his wife. Martha and Erich were killed in Auschwitz after being taken to Theresienstadt via Dresden (possibly the Hellerberg work camp in Feb/March 1943). I am trying to find information on where they lived in Halle before they went to Dresden and how this happened. I understand they had to live in a ‘Jewish House near the station. There are Stolpersteines for Martha, Erich and their mother Minna nee Mahnhart (who was from a Christian family) Thank you for any help. My wife is the daughter of Ruth Simon.

Thank you so much for all this information. I believe the Cohn family of Halle are my relatives. My father’s father was William Cohn, born in the city of Halle an der Saale. He emigrated to New York City.
Is there any more information available about any Cohn’s?
Also, I am looking for anything about the father of the child Hannah, who got to London and changed his name to Connell.
    Thank you again,
    Edwina Williams (wmsedw@aol.com)
