My mother's first cousin, Charlotte Steinberg (geb. Rosenberg), her husband, Bertold, and daughter, Marion interned at Camp de Casseneuil in Vichy France prior to deportation to Auschwitz.

Steinberg - Edited (1)

My mother’s first cousin, Charlotte Rosenberg (geb Pfifferling), her husband Bertold, and their daughter, Marion were in the south of France. Opa Karl, and also his nephew, Hans Pfifferling, tried to get them out of France and get then to America. Opa and Hans managed to get the papers, but unfortunately, too late, the 3 of them were taken in France and deported to  Auschwitz, where they perished. My Aunt Lore told me that at the time Opa didn't tell anyone so as not to get people's hopes up and then let down.

Charlotte Stienberg, born Rosenberg, 33 is listed under Germany

Bertold Stienberg, 39 & Marion Steinberg, 12 or listed under No Nationality

The Chemnitz merchant Berthold Steinberg (* 15.7.1903) and his wife Charlotte Steinberg (* 22.4.1909) got on December 16, 1930 her daughter Marion Steinberg . Berthold Steinberg was co-owner of the company Burghardt & Becher since 1930, a plot for cookware and household items. The shop was located at Poststraße 31, where the family lived. The family emigrated to France in July 1939. The spouses and their daughter were later arrested and interned in the Drancy transit camp, from where they were deported to Auschwitz on 9 September 1942. After the war, they were declared dead by the Karl-Marx-Stadt district court.

Dear Charlotte. I am so sad to find this news at last. My mother, Jeanine Spencley (nee Sabatie) was a friend of Marion Steinberg when the family lived in Monflanquin. My mother passed away in February this year (2020) but dictated her life story to me before she died. She makes mention of her friendship with Marion, the arrest of the family (with Marion initially escaping into the woods but being captured. I felt I needed to find out what happened to her and while I am not surprised to hear her life ended in Auschwitz, it is extremely sad. I am very glad my mother did not know – although I am sure she suspected. Please do contact me if you’d like to hear more. With love and respect, Sue

By the way, my mother thought that Marion had a brother, but he is not mentioned anywhere that I can find. Please let me know the correct information about this. Many thanks.
